Haunting of the Jay Road Jogger

By on November 18, 2012

Lined on both sides by swamp and the skeletal bare trees of late Fall, it doesn’t take much for the imagination to start running wild on Jay Road outside of Boltonville, home to several eerie Wisconsin legends.

One of the stories haunting the area is that of a young woman who was struck by a drunk driver while jogging along the edge of the narrow road. Local legend says her body was flung into the swamp and never recovered, leaving her desperate and lonely spirit forever wandering up and down the bleak stretch of Jay Road.

More horrors from Jay Road and other haunted locations can be found in Washington County Paranormal: A Wisconsin Legend Trip by local author and Wisconsin Sickness contributor J. Nathan Couch.

Why do these stories constantly say,”Legend has it that..” when speaking for a life lost in an accident? Was this supposed lady hit by the supposed drunk driver ever documented? Was there ever an article in the local paper about it?Is there a police report on file? Of course not. Because that’s not how spooky ghost stories are supposed to work. Hit by a drunk and the body never retrieved from the supposed ‘swamp’? Then how did anyone know a drunk hit anyone to begin with? They don’t. Because it never took place.

My friends and I drove down that road tonight a couple of hours ago. It was honestly the scariest thing that have happened to me. I was sitting in the back seat with my boyfriend. When we got into the town of Boltonville from jay road, we turned around to go back home and we had no other choice to go back down jay road. The first time wasn’t so bad…. now the second time was bad. When we hit the first stop sign heading back out to jay road we started going. The driver looked both ways and so did I. There were no other cars to be seen. Next thing we know a car came speeding and almost hit us. It almost seemed like it sped up and it wanted to hit us. We then heard squealing of its tires from stopping, but we sped up and kept going because of how weird that was. Then, there was red tail lights like a car was parked by the bridge. When we came closer to the bridge they were just gone. No where to be seen. All of a sudden when we were crossing the bridge it felt like someone or something was pulling my hair. I had chills running down my spine so bad. It was so hard for me to breathe. My heart was just pounding and pounding. I wanted to cry. I just sat there and I felt stuck. Next thing I know when we were crossing the bridge is that I swear on my life I saw blood on the guard rails. I told the driver and we kept going and speeding until we got to Plymouth, wi. I was so scared. I had no words. I never want to go back there again. Never in my life. I have never witnessed anything like that in my entire life.
