Ed GeinEdward Theodore Gein was born to Augusta Crafter (1878–1945) and George P. Gein (1873–1940) on August 27, 1906, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. His parents, both natives of Wisconsin, had married on July 7, 1900, and their marriage produced Ed and his older brother, Henry G. Gein (1901–1944).

George Gein was a violent alcoholic who was frequently unemployed. Ed and his brother rejected their violent, aimless father, as did Augusta, who treated her husband like a nonentity. Despite her deep contempt for her husband, the atrophic marriage persisted. Divorce was not an option due to the family’s religious beliefs. Augusta operated the small family grocery store and eventually purchased a farm on the outskirts of another small town, Plainfield, which became the Gein family’s permanent home.

Augusta moved to this desolate location to prevent outsiders from influencing her sons. Gein only left the premises to go to school and Augusta blocked any attempt he made to pursue friendships. Besides school, he spent most of his time doing chores on the farm. Augusta, who was a fanatical Lutheran, drummed into her boys the innate immorality of the world, the evil of drink and the belief that all women (herself excluded) were prostitutes and whores. According to Augusta, the only acceptable form of sex was for biological reproduction/procreation. She reserved time every afternoon to read to them from the Bible, usually selecting graphic verses from the Old Testament dealing with death, murder and divine retribution.

farm houseWith a slight growth over one eye and an effeminate demeanor, the young Gein became a target for bullies. Classmates and teachers recall other off-putting mannerisms such as seemingly random laughter, as if he were laughing at his own personal joke. Despite his poor social development, he did fairly well in school, particularly in reading and the study of world economics.

By the time his father George died in 1940, Henry had begun to reject Augusta’s view of the world. He had even taken to bad-mouthing her within earshot of his mortified brother. In March 1944, the brothers found themselves in the middle of a brush fire on property they owned in a neighboring county. When Ed ran to get the police, he told them he had lost sight of Henry, but then led them directly to his brother’s corpse. Although there was evidence Henry had suffered blunt trauma to his head, the local county coroner decided he died of asphyxiation while fighting the fire. Gein then lived with his mother. Less than two years later, on December 29, 1945, Augusta died from a series of strokes, leaving her grief-stricken son alone on the isolated farmstead.

Ed Gein's final victimPolice suspected Gein to be involved in the disappearance of a store clerk, Bernice Worden, in Plainfield on November 16, 1957. Upon entering a shed on his property, they made their first horrific discovery of the night: Worden’s corpse. She had been decapitated, her headless body hung upside down by means of ropes at her wrists and a crossbar at her ankles. Most horribly, the body’s trunk was empty, the ribcage split and the body “dressed out” like that of a deer. These mutilations had been performed postmortem; she had been shot at close-range with a .22-caliber rifle.

Searching the house, authorities found:

  • Human skulls mounted upon the cornerposts of his bed
  • Human skin fashioned into a lampshade and used to upholster chair seats
  • Human skullcaps, apparently in use as soup bowls
  • A human heart (it is disputed where the heart was found; the deputies’ reports all claim that the heart was in a saucepan on the stove, with some crime scene photographers claiming it was in a paper bag)
  • The head of Mary Hogan, a local tavern owner, found in a paper bag
  • A ceiling light pull consisting of human lips
  • A “mammary vest” crafted from the skin of a woman’s torso
  • A belt made from several human nipples, among many other such grisly objects
  • Socks made from human flesh

Gein's dead skin maskGein’s most notorious creations were an array of “shrunken heads.” Various neighborhood children — whom Gein occasionally babysat — had seen or heard of these objects, which Gein offhandedly described as relics from the South Seas, purportedly sent by a cousin who had served in World War II. Upon investigation, these turned out to be human facial skins, carefully peeled from cadavers and used by Gein as masks.

Gein eventually admitted under questioning that he would dig up the graves of recently buried middle-aged women he thought resembled his mother and take the bodies home, where he tanned their skin to make his macabre possessions. One writer describes Gein’s practice of putting on the tanned skins of women as an “insane transvestite ritual”. Gein denied having sex with the bodies he exhumed, explaining, “They smelled too bad.” During interrogation, Gein also admitted to the shooting death of Mary Hogan, who had been missing since 1954.

Shortly after his mother’s death, Gein decided he wanted a sex change, although it is a matter of some debate whether or not he was transsexual; by most accounts, he created his “woman suit” so he could pretend to be his mother, rather than change his sex.

Harold Schechter, an author of several true crime books, wrote a best-selling book about the Gein case called Deviant. In this book, Schechter mentions that Plainfield police officer Art Schley physically assaulted Gein during questioning by banging Gein’s head and face into a brick wall; because of this, Gein’s initial confession was ruled inadmissible. Schley died of a heart attack at the age of 43 shortly before Gein’s trial. Many who knew him said he was so traumatized by the horror of Gein’s crimes and the fear of having to testify (notably about assaulting Gein) that it led to his early death. One of his friends said, “He was a victim of Ed Gein as surely as if he had butchered him.”

Gein was found mentally incompetent and thus unfit to stand trial at the time of his arrest, and was sent to the Central State Hospital (now the Dodge Correctional Institution) in Waupun, Wisconsin. Later, Central State Hospital was converted into a prison and Gein was transferred to Mendota State Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1968, Gein’s doctors determined he was sane enough to stand trial; he was found not guilty by reason of insanity by judge Robert H. Gollmar and spent the rest of his life in the hospital.

Ghoul car on display in the Bunny Gibbons carnival sideshowWhile Gein was in detention, his house burned to the ground. Arson was suspected. In 1958, Gein’s car, which he used to haul the bodies of his victims, was sold at public auction for a then-considerable sum of $760 to an enterprising carnival sideshow operator named Bunny Gibbons. Gibbons called his attraction the “Ed Gein Ghoul Car” and charged carnival-goers 25 cents admission to see it.

On July 26, 1984, Ed Gein died of respiratory and heart failure due to cancer in Goodland Hall at the Mendota Mental Health Institute. His gravesite in the Plainfield cemetery was frequently vandalized over the years; souvenir seekers would chip off pieces of his gravestone before the bulk of it was stolen in 2000. The gravestone was recovered in June 2001 near Seattle and is presently displayed in a Wautoma, Wisconsin museum.

Oddly enough, media inadvertently turns these people into sordid heroes and icons. I guess that’s the power of the money making business. Then for decades and decades they continue to make money long after their deaths generating millions for various genres and venues……….making them famous in a sick way…….I suppose I’m guilty also, due to the fact I watch a good horror flick every now and then………

i agree; many people have been thru traumatic incidents as a child and they don’t let it take over their life. but at what point would a person kill or do the strange things he did. there’s a tipping point and when is that point crossed. i don’t know, i do know its called thinking for yourself, i really don’t understand it. that’s the way the person is and that’s that. the rest of us need to see the patterns and get the heck away from them.

Lmao for everyone saying oh I hope he burns in hell he doesn’t deserve forgiveness, don’t say u believe in God then, if u were a TRUE believer you’d know a SIN IS A SIN IN GODS EYES when you sin God doesn’t think your any better then him. So while Gods laughing at you thinking your sins arnt as equal to his, you’ll be questioned on why you think your sinner blood is better then his an if u say oh Cus I didn’t kill people Gods just gunna laugh an be like oviously u don’t follow what I say. Murder an lieing is the exact same we make up morals not God. God says we are all equal sinners. Maybe this guy wouldn’t be so fucked up if we didn’t have crazy women raising there kids under religion? His parents are crazy I could say lutherines are the reason this happend Cus that’s how he was raised an every person would say no that’s not true so don’t think u have the right to say he deserves to burn in hell Cus you have no judgment. But I’ve had family members killed an I still know I’m no better then the person next to me. BECAUSE IM A SINNER TO. so get over yourself.

God has never sinned. He died with no sin, in order to pay the price for all the sins that WE have committed and are going to commit. Regardless of what this horrible Ed guy has done, God will still forgive him. Unfortunately, one will never know whether Ed repented of his sins before he died. Chelc, you are correct when you say that we are all sinners! We all sin and we all need to be forgiven on a daily basis. Only the Lord can forgive sins because he is sinless and perfect.

Okay to all of you trash talkin.
I’m not taking his side or anything.
But He was mentally ill. Meaning he didn’t know what what he was doing.
He made 40 visits to local graveyards.
Only 30 of the visits he snapped out of his dazed like state and went home empty handed.
It’s a sickness. He wasn’t doing it for fun like other sickos out there.
He did it because he didn’t know what he was doing half the time.
What he did was wrong, But doesn’t mean he has to “suffer” or “burn in hell”.
And his childhood didn’t help with his sickness either.
Mother abusing him on everything he did.
Honestly I feel bad for him. <3

I would just like to say that Ed Gein was very mentally ill and that I agree with Brie; he can therefore not be held entirely responsible for his actions as his perception of ‘right and wrong’ were very warped. This stems from the isolated atmosphere in which his mother (also clearly mentally ill) fashioned him with her pretty fucked up ideologies. It is very likely that had he experienced a ‘good enough childhood’ and went through a decent enough early socialisation process he would never have turned out to be a murderer. It is no fault of his own, imagine you have a fly on your face, you bat it away. It is the same thing, he had these awful urges because he was mentally ill and looked for instant gratification of them. He could not help it. I also believe that he did not murder for the pleasure of killing someone, it is to do with his fixation on his mother and wanting to be/recreate her, strangely through human body part (or something alone those lines). No disrespect to his victims, may they rest in peace. I hope this gives some people a better insight in to psychosis…

      November 20, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Ther are plenty of people that grow up in abusive households and have tramatic childhoods that don’t grow up to be killers. People regardless of circumstances know what the hell they are doing and so did he. He should have been found guilty and put to death like I believe any murderer should, the people of that town were simply embarassed by what happened and wanted it over with as soon as possible.

You feel bad for him.ok so how dk you feel for thefamilies of the innocent.its people like you that are what’s wrong with this country…..what he did was unforgivable and there is a special.place for him in hell.I guess you don’t believe in the death penalty eigher?

      November 21, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Just because he was mentally ill does not mean he deserves to have “R.I.P” or “I feel bad for him” written. Just because it was concluded that it was because of his mental state, does not mean that it actually was. They don’t have near as much knowledge as we do now. When in the early 90′s and mid 90′s they still thought being gay was a mental illness. Wearing someone else’s skin does not make that a mental illness, it means he probably got off pretending to be different gender, and the fact that he could control women like his mother controlled him his entire life. He probably resented her, and his brother.

      • SGLM

        December 24, 2012 at 9:23 am

Ummm…you think homosexuality was still considered a mental illness as late as the ’90′s? If you mean the 1890′s, then you’d be correct. Being gay hasn’t been considered a mental disorder since 1973 (in The U.S.).
Aside from that little nugget, psychiatric studies on Gein, and various other serial killers throughout history, continue to be carried out to this day. They didn’t just diagnose him in the 50′s and then close the case forever. Far more is known then what you read in this little article. Do some research, please.

    • helena

      November 23, 2012 at 12:34 pm

Yea, I have to agree with everyone else: Mental illness or not, Ed Gein consciously raped, tortured, and mutilated people without remorse. The above article quotes him as saying, “They smelled too bad” when questioned about necrophilia which, is a narcissistic statement indicating the victims are less of a person than he is by continuing to insult them. He WAS the typical self-centered serial killer: an unintelligent and ungifted bully.

      • SGLM

        December 24, 2012 at 9:40 am

Have you ever known anyone in history who has been around a corpse (that’s been dead for at least a few days) that DIDN’T think it smelled horrible? How is that a) an insult or b) the part of his horrifying acts that you take as proof of him being a “typical” killer?

      • charlene

        February 24, 2013 at 10:50 pm

Actually he never raped his victims and he only killed two ppl hardly a serial killer if not for the horrible way he committed his crimes he wouldn’t even be a “legend” he was a sick man and there is no excuse for what he did but there are way worse killers in history

I grew up in the area. First of all, the tombstone is not on display at the museum. It is not on display at all. The police have it in storage in Wautoma about 15 miles away. The museum is also in Wautoma. It was at the time the jail where Ed was held for a short time. There are no souveneirs of Ed at the museum on display. They do have a couple of his rifles (or did) but will not show them.

The people that knew Ed considered him “slow,” or “odd.” They thought he was harmless. Ed would babysit for families on occassion and was regularly invited for dinner. He was good with kids because he had child like qualities. He did odd jobs for people. He was known to gift “deer sausage.” Ed hunted and this is how he got his skills at gutting, skinning, and being familiar with cuts of meat.

There were other missing people before Ed was arrested and some thought Ed was guilty of these crimes, but the bodies were not found. I find it interesting however that there was a lot of land on the Gein farm where bodies could have been buried, that was not dug up. Also DNA was not done all all the body parts to prove that these were all body parts taken from graves. They could never accound for all the body parts. It was impossible to match them up. Ed wasn’t forthcoming in his information. He was a delusional, paranoid schizophrenic. We will never know.

Plainfield was horrified about this at the time. They didn’t want the publicity. They wanted news crews gone, Ed convicted and the whole thing over. Rumor has it that Ed’s house was set on fire (so people and newscrews would quit coming) while the fire department watched it burn.

Ed’s mom obviously had mental problems. She is the one who caused him to be the way he was. All killers have problems with their parents. Was he born this way or was it his environment? In this case obviously both. As I said, his mother obviously had mental problems. She was obsessed with whores and the bible and had a mission to make Ed’s dad’s life miserable. did he cheat on her with a woman she thought was a whore? Did she decide to replace him with Ed? Whatever the case, she munipulated her son’s thinking. She brainwashed him. She had control over him. He lost his own identity. She crippled his growth mentally, sexually and intellectually. He had no coping mechanisms. She kept him isolated. She had all the control. Even after she died her voice was in his head. We will never know if she abused him physically or sexually. This woman was a real bitch.

Ed was happy while at Mendota. He was medicated and in a stable, safe place. He truly was mentally ill.

What Ed did was sick. He was sick. We are fascinated with things we do not understand. Some people fear what they do not understand. With Ed we have a murderer, a cannibal, a grave robber, and the true life inspiration for psycho.

For those of you addressing Ed Gein as sick and disgusting, just remember that his mother taught him that women were evil and were tramps. She also made sure of isolating him and the family. So, he was bound to have psychological problems. When his mother passed, he took it hard. He was a momma’s boy. His mother was the only friend he had after his brother and father passed. How he coped with losing his mother, he turned to exhuming dead bodies…trying to be her. The man was mentally ill. I’m certain if anyone lived the way he did, they would turn out just like him.

Jefferey Dahmer may have been from Ohio, but his crimes were discovered. I have lived in Wisconsin most of my life and I agree that we do seem to draw many notoriuos killers, rapists, mobsters and the like. I truly believe this is because we have out of the way hiding places and wonderfully large open spaces that attract them. Such is life. If something terrible like this happens, we mourn for the victims and families, look for justice and unfortunatly wait for the next while hoping it won’t come.

    • CeeCee

His mother called all other women whores, not herself. She taught Ed that she was the only “good” woman, so he had no hope of ever finding someone he could have a normal relationship with. One has to wonder what sort of mental illness Mrs. Gein suffered from.

Hasn’t anyone that visited this site or done their research on Ed Gein se that part of the problem was bullying for the person his mother turned him into. BULLYING…this is exactly what most of you are doing to people who are stating their OPINION about Ed Gein. No matter what anyone thinks about this case…you have to ask yourself was this monster created through nature or nurture…was he born to commit these disgusting acts or was he molded and forced into it by his mother and family life and how he was raised and then treated by society? You have to ask yourself what was this man’s mind like? How did his brain function? What created this monster? His crimes were hanious or horrific but you have to be fascinated with the mental part of his entire life. It scares me and fascinates me at the same time…What was inside the mind of this damaged man?

    • Bruce

      October 9, 2012 at 8:56 pm

Anyone that goes onto perform acts such as this is born with a propensity to do such things. Jeffrey Dahmer would be a very good example of whether “Nature/Nurture” is the problem. People go through very similar circumstances that Gein and Dahmer did, yet could NEVER go on to perform the things they did. Thankfully, a very intricate kaleidoscope of things need to fuse in order for people like them to exist, and that propensity they are born with is at the very centre of that kaleidoscope……..and yes, weak, insecure, gutless, troll bullies don’t help either.

    • IsInHere

      October 16, 2012 at 12:44 am

Definitely odd. I think it’s mostly a nurture thing with a chemical imbalance (his schizophrenia). The bullying, radically religious mother degrading the oldest male figure in his life (even though he was a jobless drunkard), and mostly his unhealthy upbringing with lack of REAL, healthy social interaction mixed with twisted concepts about women. His mother was definitely a sick, twisted woman and denied her son social interaction. I think her denial of social interaction and degrading women twisted his natural sexual curiousity into deviance and he was ashamed for it. I didn’t see him killing or digging up male bodies. Just women. I think his sexual curiosity was unhealthily geared towards his mother due to isolation and when she passed, he only wanted her, so he found middle-aged corpses like her. I don’t think this was ENTIRELY his motive, but definitely a strong one. Frued mentions that a child of about age 4 develops significant interest in the opposite sex (the child often forgets about their urges they had when they grow out of it and mature), but the way he was raised, going through puberty and the only woman that he saw to be decent, and not filthy prostitutes or whores, was his mother. Children seek approval all the time so instead of liking other women (which would upset his mother and he desperately wanted her approval) he secretely had urges towards her. I honestly think that’s a MAIN reason behind it. His upbringing was unhealthy and encouraged unnatural, unhealthy behavior. When his mother was gone, he went nuts (he probably killed his brother due to jealousy of not having ALL of the attention from his mother before she passed).

So, it’s true – there is a dark cave where all the idiots reside bouncing their inane comments off each other like wet socks (which don’t bounce by the way}, in other words your comments only serve to amuse the casual passersby like me and absolutely no social significance. do u really know what ur talking about?? Seriously? The only reason he hung people was to skin them. He never threw anyone in a river u nut. That’s a fact. He hung them to skin them not kill them. So what if u live three hours away does that mean u know what he did? I think u should do some fact finding urself. Obviously u don’t know as much as u think u do. He killed two people and they were found in his house and shed. He skinned them both. The last one he shot with a rifle hung upside down and gutted. If uve seen the crime scene photo it shows the girl hanging there not floating in the river knuckle head.

I find it interesting, not for what they did to their victums but why they did it what made them tick like that. I can read this shit all day about people like this. Thats why I am in college for it. Its just crazy how someone can kill and fuck with people like that, how they did everything to they vicyums it just blows my mind. Sorry to victums but damn some Americans are fucked up and I want to know why

    • slimbiggins

      September 1, 2012 at 1:00 am

First of all he’s a serial killer not a mass murderer a mass murderer is someone who goes on a shooting spree and kills a bunch of people at once. Apparently you don’t pay to much attention about these kinds of killings otherwise you would know that. I hate how people get that confused so ill break it down for you. Ted Bundy (serial killer) the columbine shooters mass murderers. John Wayne gacey serial killer Timothy McVeigh mass murderer /terrorists you get the picture there is a difference both on how they kill and what drives them to kill. Anybody who disagrees is just wrong had to point that out.

      • KatMora

      • Laura

        October 30, 2012 at 1:40 pm

I don’t think either of these people was a monster. His mother was a troubled woman who was trying to the best she could by her sons, but in the course of raising them, she also created at least one man who could not function in a normal way.

Have you read the facts of the case? His mother would read to them the most horrific passages from the Old Testament, the kind of reading that shows the ‘monsters’ as you call them who are hidden in the Bible.

Do you think that you would have been different from him, being a gender confused, effeminate boy who is constantly made fun of? Being a boy whose mother keeps you from making friends and being a working part of society? Being an individual who, from a very young age, hears nothing about religion and the after life but the horrific massacres and murders and prostitution of women?

I think that you are ignorant. I fear the fact that, after reading a case such as this, you feel no sympathy for the man trapped in the insanity.

I can’t even believe what I’m reading. People search people like this because it is nearly impossible to understand how a human being could be this messed up. That is why there are all these shows on T.V. about serial killers and such. Because normal people dare try to comprehend the mind of a monster desguised as a human. “Role Model”? Really people. Please think about the words your fingers are typing. Please get your thoughts in some kind of order. There is nothing positive about this individual or the HORRIFIC crimes he commited. Giving him credit for any small things makes whomever said it as capable of these crimes as Ed Gein and just as messed up in the head. Please get it together.

      September 19, 2012 at 2:47 am

true ed is messed up, im not saying this because he killed people, but how how he did it, to do what he did hanging people upside down and skinning them is wickedly insane, i could point out that maybe ed had been disgusted by the people around him, who knows if the victims had done something to cause him to kill them, and through addiction of the fascination of being able to solve your issues with fast solution was the route he preferred. In my country people not considered insane kill in numbers for land or revenge, it is sad what the person can do to another when all logic he has points to giving the ultimate amount of pain and suffering towards someone he hates, Ive seen this, women are still being burnt on stakes and disabled children being thrown into burning houses, this are what we call mentally stable human beings, just driven by pure hate and vengeance do the unthinkable. so was ed really insane or was he just driven by pure hate of everything around him!!

      • kyle

        September 24, 2012 at 4:39 am

really??? he was insane and the things that he done were stoped by his mother before she died get your facts straight before you comment he was socialy and mentally unstable with the only block to stop him (his mother) died

        • Laura

          October 30, 2012 at 1:33 pm

That’s a fair interpretation, though his mother was also very likely a huge part of the reason he lost himself after her death.

She would read to him the most gruesome parts of the Old Testament in the old “fire and brimstone” way of religion, so from a very young age he was exposed to ideas of mass murder, flagellation, and ideas that women are naught but prostitutes and whores.

He may have been an unstable person, but I think we as people are better served looking at the case of Ed Gein as a mirror for the destructive power religion can wield and the lack of acceptance of homosexuals/transvestites in society, though this is becoming less of an issue every day.

I mean, the reason he killed the tavern owner and the hardware store clerk was to create a “Woman Suit” that he could wear. It sounds to me like Ed Gein was a gender confused individual who was brought up to believe that he himself was an abomination against the Lutheran god his mother worshiped.

I find Ed to be an extremely intriguing sociological case, and I wonder whether he would have been the same man if raised in today’s more accepting and less religious society.
