Ed Gein

Infamous Wisconsin serial killer cannibal Ed Gein

When the crime scene was discovered inside Ed Gein’s secluded, rundown Wisconsin farmhouse of horrors, the veil was forever lifted on the human psyche and we were forced to accept that evil lives inside us all. But who was the Mad Butcher of Plainfield, and what drove him to find comfort in the flesh of others?

Ed GeinEdward Theodore Gein was born to Augusta Crafter and George P. Gein on August 27, 1906, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. His parents, both natives of Wisconsin, had married on July 7, 1900, and their marriage produced Ed and his older brother, Henry G. Gein.

George Gein was a violent alcoholic who was frequently unemployed. Ed and his brother rejected their violent, aimless father, as did Augusta, who treated her husband like a nonentity. Despite her deep contempt for her husband, the atrophic marriage persisted. Divorce was not an option due to the family’s religious beliefs. Augusta operated the small family grocery store and eventually purchased a farm on the outskirts of another small town, Plainfield, which became the Gein family’s permanent home.

Augusta moved to this desolate location to prevent outsiders from influencing her sons. Gein only left the premises to go to school and Augusta blocked any attempt he made to pursue friendships. Besides school, he spent most of his time doing chores on the farm. Augusta, who was a fanatical Lutheran, drummed into her boys the innate immorality of the world, the evil of drink and the belief that all women (herself excluded) were prostitutes and whores. According to Augusta, the only acceptable form of sex was for biological reproduction/procreation. She reserved time every afternoon to read to them from the Bible, usually selecting graphic verses from the Old Testament dealing with death, murder and divine retribution.

Ed Gein's farmhouse in Plainfield, WIWith a slight growth over one eye and an effeminate demeanor, the young Gein became a target for bullies. Classmates and teachers recall other off-putting mannerisms such as seemingly random laughter, as if he were laughing at his own personal joke. Despite his poor social development, he did fairly well in school, particularly in reading and the study of world economics.

By the time his father George died in 1940, Henry had begun to reject Augusta’s view of the world. He had even taken to bad-mouthing her within earshot of his mortified brother. In March 1944, the brothers found themselves in the middle of a brush fire on property they owned in a neighboring county. When Ed ran to get the police, he told them he had lost sight of Henry, but then led them directly to his brother’s corpse. Although there was evidence Henry had suffered blunt trauma to his head, the local county coroner decided he died of asphyxiation while fighting the fire. Gein then lived with his mother. Less than two years later, on December 29, 1945, Augusta died from a series of strokes, leaving her grief-stricken son alone on the isolated farmstead.

The body of local hardware store owner Bernice Worden hangs in Ed Gein's housePolice suspected Gein to be involved in the disappearance of a store clerk, Bernice Worden, in Plainfield on November 16, 1957. Upon entering a shed on his property, they made their first horrific discovery of the night: Worden’s corpse. She had been decapitated, her headless body hung upside down by means of ropes at her wrists and a crossbar at her ankles. Most horribly, the body’s trunk was empty, the ribcage split and the body “dressed out” like that of a deer. These mutilations had been performed postmortem; she had been shot at close-range with a .22-caliber rifle.

Searching the house, authorities found:

  • Human skulls mounted upon the cornerposts of his bed
  • Human skin fashioned into a lampshade and used to upholster chair seats
  • Human skullcaps, apparently in use as soup bowls
  • A human heart (it is disputed where the heart was found; the deputies’ reports all claim that the heart was in a saucepan on the stove, with some crime scene photographers claiming it was in a paper bag)
  • The head of Mary Hogan, a local tavern owner, found in a paper bag
  • A ceiling light pull consisting of human lips
  • A “mammary vest” crafted from the skin of a woman’s torso
  • A belt made from several human nipples, among many other such grisly objects
  • Socks made from human flesh

Human skin mask found in Ed Gein's houseGein’s most notorious creations were an array of “shrunken heads.” Various neighborhood children — whom Gein occasionally babysat — had seen or heard of these objects, which Gein offhandedly described as relics from the South Seas, purportedly sent by a cousin who had served in World War II. Upon investigation, these turned out to be human facial skins, carefully peeled from cadavers and used by Gein as masks.

Gein eventually admitted under questioning that he would dig up the graves of recently buried middle-aged women he thought resembled his mother and take the bodies home, where he tanned their skin to make his macabre possessions. One writer describes Gein’s practice of putting on the tanned skins of women as an “insane transvestite ritual”. Gein denied having sex with the bodies he exhumed, explaining, “They smelled too bad.” During interrogation, Gein also admitted to the shooting death of Mary Hogan, who had been missing since 1954.

Shortly after his mother’s death, Gein decided he wanted a sex change, although it is a matter of some debate whether or not he was transsexual; by most accounts, he created his “woman suit” so he could pretend to be his mother, rather than change his sex.

Harold Schechter, an author of several true crime books, wrote a best-selling book about the Gein case called Deviant. In this book, Schechter mentions that Plainfield police officer Art Schley physically assaulted Gein during questioning by banging Gein’s head and face into a brick wall; because of this, Gein’s initial confession was ruled inadmissible. Schley died of a heart attack at the age of 43 shortly before Gein’s trial. Many who knew him said he was so traumatized by the horror of Gein’s crimes and the fear of having to testify (notably about assaulting Gein) that it led to his early death. One of his friends said, “He was a victim of Ed Gein as surely as if he had butchered him.”

Gein was found mentally incompetent and thus unfit to stand trial at the time of his arrest, and was sent to the Central State Hospital (now the Dodge Correctional Institution) in Waupun, Wisconsin. Later, Central State Hospital was converted into a prison and Gein was transferred to Mendota State Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1968, Gein’s doctors determined he was sane enough to stand trial; he was found not guilty by reason of insanity by judge Robert H. Gollmar and spent the rest of his life in the hospital.

Ghoul car on display in the Bunny Gibbons carnival sideshowWhile Gein was in detention, his house burned to the ground. Arson was suspected. In 1958, Gein’s car, which he used to haul the bodies of his victims, was sold at public auction for a then-considerable sum of $760 to an enterprising carnival sideshow operator named Bunny Gibbons. Gibbons called his attraction the “Ed Gein Ghoul Car” and charged carnival-goers 25 cents admission to see it.

On July 26, 1984, Ed Gein died of respiratory and heart failure due to cancer in Goodland Hall at the Mendota Mental Health Institute. His gravesite in the Plainfield cemetery was frequently vandalized over the years; souvenir seekers would chip off pieces of his gravestone before the bulk of it was stolen in 2000. The gravestone was recovered in June 2001 near Seattle and is presently kept in storage.

I am not misinformed. Look it up. Buffalo Bill was not a real person. Just look it up. As I said before a man named Harris created him for Silence Of The Lambs. Buffalo Bills character used some things from the Ed Gein case…but Buffalo Bill was NOT a real man. Look it up…I promise you he is a fictional character.

he probably killed his father, brother and mother, I mean they all died within like seven years of each other, and most of his crimes occurred shortly after all of that, just seems like a good possibility to me…..and don’t call me names just because i’m giving my opinion

Silence of the Lambs was based off of Jeffrey Dahmer! He killed men to eat them, Ed Gein used their parts for other reasons. Do your research people!

    • Mona Thompson

      August 30, 2013 at 4:54 am

Actually Dahmer tried cannibalism but was quoted saying it just wasn’t for him…he wanted to have a zombie like sex slave and that is why he tried to pour acid into their brains thinking they would be brain dead but alive.

    • vaderblack

      August 30, 2013 at 5:12 am

Layna…..with so many serial killers out there it is easy to get these sick and twisted individuals mixed up. Dahmer attempted cannibalism on multiple occasions but couldn’t stomach it. He tried the hearts, livers, biceps and thighs in attempt (like many other killers) to become one with his victims. In the end it “didn’t suit him.” The cannibalistic acts took place in the middle of his murdering spree and by victims 12 and on, he completely gave up on the idea of ingesting human flesh. He never murdered for cannibalistic reasons. His sole reason for serial killing, as he states, was to have a completely docile, submissive companion. Which explains why every victim had a hole drilled in their head with various liquid “potions” (usually acid) poured down the new opening. Again he never killed to eat people, not once, he made a valiant effort to try it a few times but in the end he couldnt stomach it.

If theirs a creator behind such a creation, what would they think like to cause them to create such a person? Would it be some one, illuminating naughty in the field of Criminology & Psychology, or a group of neighbouring misfits advancing their personal beliefs or religion? The “science” to cause madness, so much more than spiritual possession, and a fingerprint as well. Just read or look at the article and then read the responses and possibly you will find the name of the new toy of such a creator, as it needs weakness, ignorance, fantasy minded and ilusuonal qualities to make them delusuonall. The categories are proven irrefutably endless.

        September 25, 2013 at 12:24 am

Environment can be very important for the sociopath. However, studies have shown significant differences in both the structure and function of the sociopathic brain. Part of the prefrontal cortex is responsible for emotions, empathy etc. The amygdala is, in part, in control of impulse control. Functional MRI showed a decrease or absence of communication between these two parts of the brain in sociopaths. The smaller size of these areas and/or the lack of communication between the two show there is a genetic component involved creating at very least a propensity for their criminal behavior. Scientists have discovered a specific gene, the warrior gene, prevalent in sociopaths.people can be born with a warrior gene, environment/Nurture can exasperate this predisposition. People can be born this way. A true mental illness. This does not excuse the violent sociopath’s behavior. Crimes they commit are often horrific. Society deserves to be protected against them. They should be put in mental institutions for the criminally insane with maximum security. Unfortunately, there is no rehabilitation for these types of patients.

What everyone is missing is that the whole story of Ed Gein could have, and should have been avoided. Because the medical examiner erred in calling his brothers death an accident. He murdered him in a sickening way. Knocked him unconscious, then burned him alive. He should have been removed from society then. As a result of that mistake, all the other events took place. Including people making profits off of the story. Very sad, but true.

What was your Grandpa’s last name? My Grandparents lived a couple miles down the road from Geins farm also and are buried a few miles outside of Plainfield close to Almond. They last name was Pomerenke. My grandmother was 98 and passed away in the summer of 2006. My Grandparents uses to talk about Ed when I was younger and not as much when they got older. One of my younger brothers graduated from Highschool in Plainfield and I would run in track there at the Tri-County meet.

I’m sorry I just can’t accept that. Yes, people suffer from mental illness, but there’s no way, I don’t care how sick you are, that someone can think that this is okay. And to do it that many times. Even if you are mentally sick, you comprehend and can still discern pain in yourself and others. You can also differentiate what is and is not accepted by society , and some things aren’t accepted for a REASON- like making soup bowls out of a human skull. I believe everyone deserves forgiveness from God, but some people there’s just no way you can reason with the disgustingness of their actions. No way

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. They are fixated on the thing they are trying to Achieve so no they cannot differentiate what is and what is not acceptable by society and they have no concept of causing others pain. If tey did they would be classed as having a mental illness. I’m not saying what he did was right, but that he had no control over what he was doing

its not that people think its “cool” but are more interested in how the human brain can function like this & how someone can begin to be okay with living this way . you are saying people like me need god in our lives , but god says not to judge so really you’re only making yourself look bad . i do have god in my life i may not be the perfect christain or go to church every sunday or read the bible every day but i DO have god in my life . i study these types of things because for one its odly & wierdly fascinating that someone can live like this & yet no one can sometimes begin to even see the signs or know how to spot a serial killer because they don not know what that type of person is thinking or what kind of mental , psychological illnesses these type of people have . i am going to school to major in criminal psychology & sociology so maybe possibly one of these days myself or someone that studies the things i do will be able to stop someone like this before they do become a “serial killer” . i am 16 yrs old & yet it amazes me how stupid & ignorant some “adults” can be . so before you judge & say people need god you may want to think of other reasons why people would read this stuff or study up on it because not everybody thinks its “cool” but are merely fascinated by the thought process & background life of someone of ed’s kind .

This story along with these pics, made me sooooo sick to my stomach that I almost threw up. The reason I searched this up is because my parents were just telling me that they went to see it in theaters when it came out. They also told me the story of what he did. He was so super sick mindedly twisted.

Why do you hate people so much? We are not sick we are people who have as much right to live as u do. Do not assume we are all sick people. Maybe some are here for research or other reasons. So before you go around accusing people make sure your own home is in order first. I am a man who does not demonize a whole group of people by the actions of a select few. Did we blame all of germany for what the Nazi’s did? Did we blame all whites for the actions of the KKK? NO! So “Judge us not equally”

Paul Martin ur a moron. Do ur research. Ed Gein was the inspiration for many horror movies & shows just like every other screwed up famous murder. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was ” based on true events”, like Ed Geins actions, it did not actually happen.

        • joy

          July 10, 2013 at 8:28 pm

Chainsaw massacre didn’t really happen. When it says it’s based on a true story it meant based on a similar incident, the Ed gein story being that incident.

        • Mona Thompson

          September 1, 2013 at 2:23 pm

Hey Paul…I think what Brittany means is is leather faces character based off of Ed Geins case…and it is! Leather face is not a real person. He is based off of true happenings from Ed Geins life. So yes Brittany… The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is based off of Ed Gein and so is Silence of the Lambs and also Alfred Hitchcocks Psyco. Look it up…it’s all there. I don’t think she thought Wisconsin and Texas were in the same place but it is amusing that you put LOL at the end of your statement Paul when your the one that actually was wrong and completely misunderstood what she was trying to ask.

      • Brenda

Actually, the texas chainsaw movies were based off of Ed Gein, the massacre never actually happened.

    • Maggie Devens

      June 10, 2013 at 11:54 pm

he is not based on the Texas chainsaw massacre which is total fiction. it was put about when the first one came out in the 50’s that it was a true story, but that was a hoax. Ed Gein is a real person who was arrested for his crimes. Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs was based on Ed Gein. Hannibal Lector was based on the person of Albert Fish who was executed in 1936 for murdering and eating humans.

      • Valerie

texas chainsaw has nothing to do with ed gein.he was a prolific serial killer which means he had to kill more than 3 to be a serial killer.go to any library and you might find a book about him written by some one that actualy seen the case.

      • Megan.

        July 12, 2013 at 12:13 pm

Actually he is based off the movies Texas chainsaw massacre. The movies just reached out more than the real story. Even though this happend in Wisconson & he did not use a chainsaw it still infact is based off him. Silence of the lamb is either based off Ed Gein or buffalo bill. I can’t remember.

      • Layna

        August 30, 2013 at 4:04 am

Silence of the Lambs was actually based on Jeffrey Dahmer….not Ed Gein. Both being from Wisconsin I’m not surprised there’s some confusion.

        • Mona Thompson

          August 30, 2013 at 4:44 am

Absolutely not Layna!!! Since Dahmer was arrested in 91 and silence of the lambs was released in 91. Silence of the lambs, psycho and Texas chainsaw massacre took things from Ed Geins actual case and used them in the movies. Just to prove I’m not talking out of my ass check out this link. Gein

You all keep bickering like children. It happened over sixtey years ago. He killed two and dug up multiple bodies from the local cemetary. Its not so much sick as it is interesting; how a persons psyche can be destroyed by an over-zealous mother and something like ed gein is created. He used his farming and handyman skills in his atrocities, amazing.

Is he any different than someone that grows up wanting to work in an autopsy room? Or a soldier over in the middlemost shooting little kids everyday? Or the tribes in south america that save human skulls as dishes and eat pieces of brain? The only difference is that his crimes were made a public display, this is just human nature that only within the past 300 years has become a crime. Without being told that any of this is wrong, and being blessed with the set of morals we get from our parents, schools and so on i almost guarantee there’d be no difference between him, you or I

          • Ridgeway

            July 17, 2013 at 4:33 am

I agree with you. Have we not all had these impulses? I can get into their minds and understand them. I can step into their shoes and realize most of these people are not truly the monsters they are turned into by hollywood. The Happy Face killer suffered abuse just like Gein, As did the Deadly Drifter. Hecwas forced to wear dresses and was beaten daily by his mother. And his father told him to cope with bestiality. So before we judge we should take a long look at ourselves. Granted mental illness is not an excuse. There is no excuse. But should we demonize them so? Or are we truly all monsters deep down?

wanting to be a medical examiner (doing autopsies) doesn’t mean that person likes seeing or being around deceased people.
